BHU allocates 25% additional funding to sports activities

NEW DELHI: Banaras Hindu University (BHU) will allocate separate funding for sports activities in the university. The separate funding is aimed at encouraging student participation in sports activities in BHU, said a statement issued by the university on Tuesday.

Further, the statement says that the decision is based on the Khelo India programme by the Government of India (GoI) “ to revive the sports culture in the country at the grass-root level by building a strong framework for all sports”. According to the official statement, BHU will allocate 25 percent additional funding for sports based on each hostel resident.

Commenting on this decision, vice-chancellor of BHU, Sudhi Kumar Jain said: “The university is fully committed to ensure the most vibrant student life in the hostels and we are taking important steps in that regard. Increasing hostel budgets, for sports in particular, is one such step in that direction”. Based on his recommendation, the notice says that different institutions and faculties have established athletic associations.

BHU: New focus on sports

New sporting equipment and facilities will be provided to BHU students, for example, a new badminton rubberized court, new boxing ring and kabaddi court will be developed while new handball court has been developed recently, and kho-kho court is almost complete. BHU also restored its ground facilities, including the amphitheatre and fencing and has started work on installing flood lights.

In the last four months, ten sporting events were organised including paralympic and all women’s tournaments in which overall more than 5,000 students participated.

Further, BC Kapri, who is general secretary of university sports board said: “By promoting the sporting culture on campus, we will be able to identify our strengths and the shining talents, which will also help in enhancing the glory of Banaras Hindu University at national and international level”.
