NEW DELHI: Chandigarh University in a recent virtual session had launched a new programme for students who are interested in aerospace engineering. This academic programme has been named as Student Satellite Designing and Training - ‘CUSAT.’

The inauguration of CUSAT was attended by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) scientist Dr YS Rajan, former ISRO director RM Vasagam and Dr Mylswamy Annadurai, programme director of Chandrayaan-1 and Mangalyaan.

The CUSAT programme aims at nurturing the students' innovative skills in satellite designing. For this, “The students would undergo training under the guidance of former Indian and international space scientists, including scientists from ISRO,” said Chandigarh University Chancellor, Satnam Singh Sandhu.

This programme includes extensive academic and practical sessions on satellite designing, integration of components, testing and simulation of launch process as well as analysis of data collected from the satellite. The university will be spending Rs 1 crore on designing a multipurpose nano-satellite in 10-12 months. Sandhu said that the training of the students for this high budget project is already in action.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Vasagam, former director of ISRO said, “The training of young students should focus on apprising them with the real-time problems that can be solved with the help of space technology . Satellite to be designed by Chandigarh University should focus on providing and collecting data which can be useful to tackle the problems like floods, landslides, drought situation and underground water conservation.”
