NEW DELHI: Maharashtra schools and colleges will remain closed till February 15, except for Class 10 and Class 12. The Maharashtra Government released new Covid guidelines on Saturday in response to the increasing Covid cases in the state.

“Academic activities required to be taken by different education boards for Class 10 and Class 12 will be allowed to continue. All administrative activities and other activities related to education will continue except offline classes. Academic activities will be continued in Maharashtra in online mode,” said the Maharashtra Government order. The Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray has posted the order on social media.

The Maharashtra government has also permitted activities sanctioned by the education department and department of women and child development or skill development to continue. Such activities are to be approved by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).

Restrictions on the movement of people have also been imposed. People are not allowed to move in groups of five or more from 5 am to 11 pm. A night curfew has also been imposed in the state prohibiting individuals to move around between 11 pm to 5 am except for essential purposes.

Previously, Varsha Gaikwad, school education minister of Maharashtra asked districts to make decisions on schools closing and reopening in their jurisdiction, as per various media reports. Following this schools were closed in Maharashtra's Mumbai for Classes 1 to 9 and 11 till January 31, owing to the increasing number of Covid and Omicron cases in Mumbai. Similarly, areas like Nashik and Pune closed schools in their own respective jurisdiction.
