COVID-19: Delhi University announces plans to prepare for third wave

NEW DELHI: The Delhi University announced in a statement that it is setting up COVID care facilities, centres for continuous vaccination and oxygen plants in preparation for a third wave of COVID-19.

The university said that it has made arrangements for “continuous vaccination” centres at the Keshav Mahavidyalaya, Lakshmibai College and at the health centre of the university as “vaccination is one of the most important steps to prevent fatality”, said the statement.

The university said that these centres will be open to the general public as well.

Preparing for COVID-19 third wave

Delhi University has also announced “augmented arrangements” for COVID-19 testing at three college campuses of Miranda House, Janki Devi Memorial College and Gargi college.

The university will also set up COVID-care facilities of 100 beds each in Janki Devi Memorial College and Hansraj College. In addition to this, the university said that one of the campus hostels will be converted to COVID-care centre for an additional 200 beds.

These facilities will also have oxygen supplies, uninterrupted power supply, medicines and facilities for food, the university said. It also said that the university will give salaries to doctors and nurses as they are “in great demand but short supply”.

It also announced plans to have agreements with different pathology labs or other organisations to further strengthen the facilities at three of its health centres.

Oxygen supply

Noting that the lack of oxygen supply “was one of the biggest reasons for devastations” during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the university said that it is setting up an oxygen plant that fills upto 80 cylinders per day. It noted that an oxygen plan in a campus setting will “need minimum clearances and approvals from the government”.

“We will provide these cylinders, when in need, to every DU member and also to those in the neighbourhood. This step will help support other universities and educational institutes in Delhi as well,” the university said.

The university said it is planning to procure about 240 oxygen concentrators providing oxygen flow at 10 litres per minute, 500 pulse oximeters and about 100 thermal scanners.
