NEW DELHI: Foreign Medical Graduate students in India that completed their MBBS in a foreign country request the National Medical Commission (NMC) increase in the availability of seats for the mandatory internship in various states of India. Such students have been waiting to complete their one or two year mandatory hospital rotation but are unable to do so due to the unavailability of seats.

According to a notice by the NMC, FMG students would be allotted seats in government medical colleges with an additional 7.5% seat where they will be joining the CMRI externship programme. Such students would also be getting a stipend on par with their Indian counterparts.

"Based on this circular by NMC we, the foreign medical graduates, has personally went to DMC (Delhi Medical Council) but we didn't get the proper response . We are requesting you to please consider our situation and admit us in the medical colleges for one/two-year externship program, which must be preferred by the office with all the benefits including the stipend," read a letter from FMG students to the DMC.

According to previous circular by the DMC a total of 42 seats have been made available to DMC by three out of 10 medical colleges. Responding to this circular, a student on twitter says, "Complete failure of NMC who can't even amend their own rules and regulations created for FMGs. How can hospitals deny if national medical council made some law for FMGs?It was much better earlier when students could apply in hospitals on interview basis."

In recent news, FMG students in Rajasthan staged a protest against the limited number of seats in counselling for the mandatory internship. Out of the 2,000 seats allocated to FMGs, Rajasthan Medical Council (RMC) conducted counselling for only 399 seats for medical internship.
