IIT Bombay launches Rahul Bajaj Technology Innovation Centre

IITB: RBTIC aims to facilitate the conversion of innovative ideas and research activity into ventures and support existing industries.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay Rahul Bajaj Technology Innovation Centre (RBTIC) was inaugurated today, June 10, 2022 by RA Mashelkar, former director-general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The centre was a dream envisioned by the late Rahul Bajaj, former chairman of Bajaj Groups to promote innovative ideas and research activities and realise them into ventures and support existing industries.

IIT Bombay RBTIC will house the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), Industrial Research and Consultancy Centre (IRCC), and Industrial Design Centre (IDC) School of Design. It is a 7-floor multi-department academic building that includes a welcoming lobby, two exhibition halls, a few academic and conference spaces, classrooms, and office spaces.

RBTIC's foundation stone was laid in 2018 by Bajaj. His contributions to IIT Bombay were celebrated during the inauguration ceremony in the presence of his family members. "His generous donation has helped the Institute to build a Centre that brings together all of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and R&D activities, under one roof, in a modern building ‘RBTIC’," said a statement from IIT Bombay.

“Technology innovation being the key to the progress of the country, IIT Bombay lays a lot of emphasis on innovation and I am sure that the vision of late Shri Rahul Bajaj will take us much further in our journey towards meeting that goal,” Subhasis Chaudhuri, director of IIT Bombay said.

During the event, Mashelkar and Niraj Bajaj, chairman of Bajaj Auto Limited released a technology brochure titled IIT Bombay’s Ideas and Innovations for Society (IBIS) by the Industrial Research and Consultancy Centre. The book lists technologies developed in IIT Bombay which are at various levels of technology readiness.
