IIT Delhi alumnus gifts USD 1 million to Computer Science and Engineering department

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Delhi’s alumnus Mohit Aron has gifted USD 1 Million to the Institute’s Computer Science and Engineering department. The institute said, Mohit Aron Endowment will be used to help Computer Science and Engineering department at IIT Delhi and establish itself as a world-leading Computer Science department.

The funds will be used to support the faculty’s research activities and to ensure that the undergraduate, Masters and PhD students of the department can attend conferences, workshops, and competitive events in India and abroad, said the department.

Aron studied BTechin IIT Delhi's 1995 batch of Computer Science and Engineering department. Aron received the “Outstanding Engineering Alumni Award” in 2018, from Rice University where he completed his PhD in 2000. He also received the Distinguished Alumni Award from IIT Delhi in 2019.

Talking about his contribution, Mohit Aron said, “My education from the Department of Computer Science at IIT Delhi has been a foundational pillar of my career, and I am what I am today in large part due to that. This gift is my way of giving something back to the department that has given me so much.”

Prem Kalra, head, Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Delhi said, “The CSE department has added many new members to the faculty in the last 2 years. This together with Mohit’s generous gift will propel us further towards our goal of being amongst the top 50 CS departments worldwide by 2025 and within the top 30 by 2030”.

V. Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi, thanked Mohit Aron for his contribution and said, “Alumni contributions, such as those of Mohit’s, are an important resource to enhance the Institute’s competitiveness in attracting both students and faculty. With the recent launch of the School of Artificial Intelligence (ScAI), IIT Delhi has become an exciting and vibrant destination for research and training in CS, AI, Data Science and allied areas”.
