IIT Delhi PhD student died, another injured in road accident; institute mourns loss

NEW DELHI: An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi PhD student died and another student got injured in a road accident. The accident occured outside the campus of the institute on the night of January 17, 2023, the institute said. The two PhD students belonged to the textile and fibre department of IIT Delhi.

PhD students Ashraf Nawaz Khan and Ankur Shukla met with a ‘tragic’ accident due to which Khan lost his life while Shukla is undergoing treatment.

IIT Delhi said that the police are investigating the incident and that it mourns the loss of its PhD student. The institute added that it is providing support to the families of Khan and Shukla.

“On the night of January 17, 2023, two IIT Delhi Ph.D. students from the Textile and Fibre Engineering Department met with a tragic road accident outside the campus.

One of the students, Mr. Ashraf Nawaz Khan, succumbed to the injuries resulting from the accident. Another student, Mr. Ankur Shukla, who also got injured, is undergoing treatment. The police are investigating the accident,” said IIT Delhi in an official statement.

“The institute community mourns the loss of its student and extends its heartfelt condolences to his family. We are also praying for the quick recovery of Mr. Ankur Shukla. The institute is providing all necessary support to the families of both students,” the institute added.
