IIT Jodhpur foundation day concludes; Rs 5 crore allocated to set up nation’s first chair on AI

IIT Jodhpur will start a programme on perception and cognitive engineering at cost of Rs 155 crore.

NEW DELHI: The secretary of ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) Alkesh Kumar Sharma announced to allocate Rs 5 crore to set up the nation’s first MeitY chair on artificial intelligence (AI) at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur. He was the chief guest of the IIT Jodhpur foundation day.

The institute said Rs 155 crore has been approved for setting up a programme on perception and cognitive engineering. In addition, it also announced that Rs 33 crore has been granted for setting up of the Intelligent internet of things (IoT) for sensing application.

The event was presided over by R Chidambaram, board of governors chairman, IIT Jodhpur and Santanu Chaudhury, director, IIT Jodhpur gave the welcome address.

Alkesh Kumar Sharma inaugurated the student’s innovation exhibition and appreciated the institute’s vision towards emerging technologies and technology-led inclusive development. He appreciated the efforts made by IIT Jodhpur in implementing various government schemes by scaling up its operations and leveraging its capacities to bring technology revolution.

A session on ‘Scientific excellence at IIT Jodhpur’ was also held on the occasion. The chief guest of the session was Jitendra J Jadhav, director, Aeronautical Development Agency, Bengaluru. The Foundation Day oration was given by Pushpak Bhattacharya, former director, IIT Patna, and the session was presided over by Santanu Chaudhury.

IIT Jodhpur Foundation Day: Awards

Fifteen research presentations were presented by the faculty of IIT Jodhpur. A total of 15 students, staff and faculty were awarded for the best phone photography competition out of 140 plus entries.

IIT Jodhpur honoured 11 of its faculty members and three staff members on this occasion to recognise their excellent contributions at all levels of their career path at IIT Jodhpur.

The IIT Jodhpur also awarded Institute Awards for Research Excellence during the foundation day. Manish Narwaria, Shahab Ahmad and Anuj Pal Kapoor were awarded Young faculty awards in engineering, science and social science, respectively. All three are employed as associate professors in the IIT Guwahati.

The institute also awarded its staff member Prashant Bhardwaj, assistant registrar, Ashok Gehlot, superintendent and Shyam Sunder Singh, junior assistant.
