IIT Jodhpur's new BTech in civil and infrastructure engineering includes AI training
The IIT Jodhpur students of this programme can specialize in either ‘smart infrastructure’ or ‘environmental engineering’ in addition to the regular BTech.
NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology, Jodhpur has introduced a BTech program in civil and infrastructure engineering. The BTech programme is part of the programmes offered by IIT Jodhpur. IIT Jodhpur had earlier launched eight programmes which included BTech in Bioengineering, AI and Data Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Civil and Infrastructure Engineering.
“The curriculum of civil and infrastructure engineering will introduce students to a wide variety of fields in advanced civil engineering such as infrastructure planning and designing, a good knowledge of artificial Intelligence and machine learning, Smart materials and sensors, and security of infrastructure against physical and digital threats, IIT Jodhpur said in a press statement. "These courses allow students to earn a specialization in either ‘smart infrastructure’ or ‘environmental engineering’ in addition to the regular BTech," added IIT Jodhpur.
Civil engineering program of IIT Jodhpur aims at training engineers with a strong foundation in analytical, experimental, and computational methods to study various aspects of civil and infrastructure systems. The course will also train the students in understanding of green and sustainable materials, practices, and principles to design resilient infrastructure systems.
The students of civil and infrastructure engineering can explore careers in interdisciplinary areas like smart and sustainable infrastructure engineering, digital twins and asset management, and application of AI and machine learning, among others.
Speaking about the programme, Ranju Mohan, head, Department of Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, IIT Jodhpur, said, "Unlike the manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace industries, civil and infrastructure industries have been slow in embracing the digital and transformative technologies. Application of artificial intelligence, cyber-physical systems, and digital twins will reduce cost and time, streamline construction, and reduce waste. We are creating next generation civil engineers who can address societal needs from a multidisciplinary perspective which is exactly what the current industry needs.”
