IIT Kanpur: 3 student chapters collaborate to organise three-day materials camp

IIT Kanpur: 38 students and 10 teachers from different schools in Kanpur attended the camp on scientific topics related to materials.

NEW DELHI: Three student chapters from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur – American Society for Metals (ASM), Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) and Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) – organised a three-day “Materials Camp” at IIT Kanpur from May 6 to 8. Thirty-eight students and 10 teachers from nine schools participated, which included the following schools: DPS Azad Nagar, DPS Kalyanpur, Dr. Virendra Swaroop Education Centre, Jai Narayan Vidya Mandir, Kendriya Vidyalaya IIT Kanpur, Methodist High School, Seth Anandram Jaipuria School, Sheiling House School, and Sir Padampat Singhania School.

The material camp was inaugurated by Pradeep Goyal who is vice president of ASM International.

According to the official statement, the schedule of the three day materials camp included talks on “Classification of Materials” by Niraj Chawake. After this, Shruti Dubey and Pooja Rani from IIT Kanpur gave real-life demonstrations on materials through mobile phones. Next, Kantesh Balani gave a talk on “Fascinating World of Materials,” and Anish Upadhyaya talked about challenges in materials. Finally, Gyan P Bajpai, and Ajay Singh from IIT Kanpur gave a session on sample preparation and microscopy of various samples in the physical metallurgy laboratory.

On the second day, more sessions were conducted on electrospinning, wetting, lab safety, and scanning electron microscopy, and a virtual session on electron microscopy for beginners.

Finally, on the third day, mechanical testing and manufacturing processes were the main topics. The participating students were taken on an industrial visit to Anod Plasma Spray

Ltd. so that the students could understand surface preparation and coating deposition techniques.
