IIT Madras' Plan: 3 online degrees, hybrid learning, 10% international PG students

NEW DELHI: Being one of the top 2 institutions in India for faculty and students, and amongst top 50 in research in 3 engineering courses, introducing 3 online programmes and hybrid learning, spending Rs 75 crores per annum on infrastructure, and having 10% international graduate students are some of the targets in the Strategic Plan 2021-27 of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras launched by the Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan today.

In its strategic plan, IIT Madras has set targets for human resources, infrastructure, student life, research, course programmes, innovation and entrepreneurship, and internationalization. The institute aims to introduce two training programmes per year for the staff; set up 2 new centres every year at the Discovery campus, a wellness centre for the holistic development of students, 25% research students at PMRF level, having 50,000 student strength; 5% international faculty and sending 50% PhD students abroad for at least 3 months, along with other plans.

Pradhan said in a tweet, “Glad to release the Strategic Plan 2021-27 of @iitmadras and dedicate @Mphasis Centre for Quantum Sciences & Kotak-IIT(M) Save Energy Mission with Prof. V Kamakoti, Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, Prof. A Ramesh, Prof. Abhijit Deshpande, esteemed guests and my IIT(M) family.”

Pradhan said he’s happy to inaugurate the indigenous GDI engine developed by the institute and supported by TVS and a low-cost vegetable cart incubated at IIT Madras. He congratulated everyone on the inauguration and launch of these initiatives towards academic excellence and nation-building.

“The day is not far when the whole world will come to IIT Madras to benefit from the Brain Research Centre. Ideas, like 3D-printing technology can revolutionise construction, help address the issues of displacement and give a life of dignity to the poor,” he said. Due to the prowess of our IITs, especially IIT Madras, India will be rolling out indigenous 5G by the end of 2023. It will bring a paradigm shift in our economy. India’s innovation, #5Gi will not be a commodity of isolation. It will be for global welfare, he added.

Dharmendra Pradhan appealed to IIT Madras to take a pledge to celebrate a day on the milestones of students in new entrepreneurship, filing patents for public good, facilitating ease-of-living for the poorest.
