IIT Mandi develops smart road monitoring system to prevent accidents and manage traffic

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi students and faculty innovators have developed a smart road monitoring system that will help prevent accidents occurring at sharp turns and enhance traffic management, especially in the hilly areas.

In hilly areas with many sharp curves and bad weather at times; police intervention, convex mirror installation, and other techniques don’t work in managing traffic and preventing accidents. Therefore, a faculty member and some Btech students from mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering department of IIT Mandi have created the system that can be used for speed detection, vehicle counts, enhanced traffic management, by employing the micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and internet of things (IoT) technologies.

“The developed system comprises two layers of detection units on each side of the turn and two signalling units to alert the drivers,” a statement from IIT Mandi said. It will detect the type of vehicle passing through the unit and if it is heading toward the curve, the drivers on the other side will be alerted about the incoming traffic through a signal.

Moreover, it will help gain data on the load of the vehicle through AI and machine learning and help in traffic management.

“Being mechanical in nature, the developed system can work in any weather including rain, snow, fog or other poor visibility conditions and the data can be encrypted and shared to only appropriate stakeholders,” the IIT Mandi further said.

K V Uday, assistant professor of school of engineering, IIT Mandi, said: "This technique will not only reduce the accident risk in sharp curves, but will also help in reducing human intervention on traffic counts, management and helps in decision making.”
