IIT Roorkee conducts alumni outreach event at Kolkata as part of 175 years celebration

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has conducted an alumni outreach event at Kolkata on July 17, 2022, as part of its 175th-anniversary celebrations, which started on November 25, 2021. Alumni, their families, and retired IIT Roorkee faculty members joined the event. The IIT Roorkee 175th year celebrations are scheduled to go on till November 24, 2022. As part of the celebrations, many academic, cultural, sports and outreach activities are being planned by students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

According to a statement from IIT Roorkee, this was the third time in a row IIT Roorkee conducted zonal outreach activities. IIT Roorkee intends to extend the celebration to more cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, and Delhi among others.

Padmashri Harshavardhan Neotia, chairman of Ambuja Neotia Group was present during the event. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, director of IIT Roorkee handed a keepsake to senior IIT Roorkee alumni in Kolkata, who had completed 50 years of graduation.

"In our 175th year, this is the third outreach engagement aimed at instilling the importance of a close-knit affiliation within students, alumni, and faculty. Throughout history, teachers and seniors who came before us paved a way for the present minds to climb to the top. The event is aimed at creating an environment for all the alumni in the network to connect with their alma mater and fellow alumni, both senior and junior to them,” said Chaturvedi.

IIT Roorkee was established in the year 1847. It was the first engineering college in the British Empire, and was then called The Roorkee College. In November 1949, after India became independent, it was made the first engineering university of India. On September 21, 2001, the university was declared an institute of national importance, and made the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee by passing a bill in the parliament.
