IIT Roorkee organises “Abhyudaya” lecture cum workshop on diversity and inclusion policy

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee (DInC) organised “Abhyudaya” on September 6 at the Auditorium, Multi Activity Centre. The event had an inaugural lecture cum workshop on diversity and inclusion policy.

IIT Roorkee in a statement said that with the help of DInC, the institute aims to cultivate an organisational culture and an inclusive, and equitable workspace for learning. "Abhyudaya" aims to foster research and technological advancements along with creating an equitable future and innovation.

The Chief Guest of the event was N Kalaiselvi, director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR). Kalaiselvi delivered a lecture on "Diversity, Inclusivity and Innovation".
The Committee conducted a workshop on diversity inclusion policy with external experts Justice Ajay Bhanot of Allahabad High Court and Anita Aggarwal, head-tech, Development Transfer, DST government of India. The internal panelists included Ranjana Pathania, department of biosciences and bioengineering, and Reeti Upadhyay, deputy registrar, IIT Roorkee. The workshop was moderated by Rajat Agrawal, department of management sciences, IIT Roorkee.

The event was coordinated by Sarada Pradhan with joint efforts by all DInC members Sneha Singh, Rachita Gulati, Vimal Kumar, Himanshu Jain, students, and Md. Anze M.P. Mahua Mukherjee, chairperson, DInC welcomed the gathering. The event was attended by students, teaching, and non-teaching staff of the IIT Roorkee.
The event was inaugurated by K K Pant, director of IIT Roorkee. Pant discussed the significance of a diverse environment on campus. The IIT Roorkee director said, “IITR has consistently nurtured some of the finest minds, sculpting not only their careers but also their characters. The legacy of IITR transcends its campus, reaching every corner of the globe through its alumni, who are luminaries, visionaries, and pioneers in their respective domains.”

Justice Ajay Bhanot of Allahabad High Court addressed the crucial issue of "Sources of Error and Bias in Decision-Making Process". His insightful remarks explored the critical importance of identifying and mitigating errors and biases to eliminate discrimination within the educational framework and society at large.
Anita Aggarwal emphasised, “ the need to be proactive in fostering diversity in all programs, initiatives, and research teams, recognizing the rich tapestry of talent that thrives in India.”
