IITs in Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur offer internship, sponsored MTech programmes to Ladakh students

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur and administration of Union Territory of Ladakh have collaborated to offer internships and sponsored MTech programmes to students from Ladakh. Interested students can apply on the official website of IIT Delhi – iitd.ac.in. The last date to apply for short-term internships, long-term internships and MTech programmes at the 3 IITs is June 30, 2022.

“This initiative has been launched with an idea to enhance opportunities for the students from Ladakh who are currently pursuing an undergraduate level course in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects,” said an official statement from IIT Delhi. This effort is being done in consonance with the efforts by the three IITs to help the Administration of Union Territory of Ladakh to set up an engineering college in the Union Territory, it said.

The duration of short-term internships for undergraduate students is 1.5 to 2 months whereas the long-term internships are of 6 months duration. There are a total of 30 seats for the short-term internship, 15 seats for long-term internship and 12 seats for MTech programmes at the 3 IITs.

Selection Process, scholarships

Students for short-term internships would be selected on the basis of their application. However, for the long-term internship and MTech, the selection of students would be done on the basis of their application as well as an online interview.

The students selected for the short-term and long-term internships would be paid consolidated scholarships of Rs 15,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively. The students selected for the MTech programmes would be paid a scholarship of Rs 25,000 per month.

Speaking about the opportunities being offered to the students from Ladakh, Professor Shantanu Roy, Dean Academics, IIT Delhi and Coordinator for the programme, said, “Colleagues from all three IITs have come together for this effort to enhance the interest level and opportunities amongst students from Ladakh in STEM subjects. We hope this joint effort of the IITs would help enhance the skilled manpower in the UT in STEM subjects”.
