DU Admissions 2020: UG registrations up by nearly 37 per cent; PG by over 12 per cent

NEW DELHI: With the closure of merit-based registrations on August 31, the Delhi University (DU) has recorded nearly 37 per cent more applications for undergraduate admissions than last year. According to the official data released by the DU officials, 3,53,919 candidates have registered and paid the application fee for admission to UG courses in 2020, while the paid registrations for last year were 2,58,388. This means that the Delhi University has received 95,531 more applications for UG admissions this year which translates into nearly 37 per cent more applicants for the admission year 2020.

However, if we include unpaid registrations too, then the number goes upto 5,63,669 for UG courses, which is 1,95,774 more than last year. In 2019, the total number of applications received by the Delhi University (paid, unpaid both) stood at 3,67,895. This means that the overall number of applications (paid-unpaid) are over 53 per cent more than the previous year.

Over 37 Percent Skip Fee Payment

Furthermore, the data also reflects that 2,09,750 candidates did not pay the fee after registering for DU UG admissions 2020. Out of the total 5,63,669 paid, unpaid registrations this year, only 3,53,919 decided to pay the registration fee. In other words, 2,09,750 candidates decided not to pay the DU application fee. This translates to over 37 per cent applicants not paying the registration fee for DU UG admissions.

Category-wise registrations witness a rise too

Furthermore, even the category-wise registration data for 2020 UG admissions reflect more number of registrations than the last year. Unreserved category (UR), which contributes the maximum number of applications, saw 2,22,831 candidates registering for undergraduate programmes, while the total number of UG registrations from this category last year was 1,52,478. Thus, from this category, 70,353 more applications have been received this year by the Delhi University.

DU PG Admissions 2020 - Over 12 per cent more applications

Following suit are the trends for PG registrations 2020, however, in terms of total paid registrations, there is not much different than last year. The total number of paid candidates, who have applied for admission to PG courses in 2020 at DU stand at 1,46,996, which is 15,867 more than the 1,31,129 applications received by DU last year. This 15,867 translates to over 12 per cent than last year.

However, if we include the unpaid applications too, then the total number of registrations for PG courses in 2020 stand at 1,83,674, while in 2019, the number of overall paid, unpaid applications was 1,54,075. This makes the difference of 29,599 more applications this year over last year.

M.Phil/PhD registrations marginally up

While the overall registrations for M.Phil/PhD courses (which includes unpaid applications too) have seen a dip over last year, the number of paid registrations for these courses has gone up, though marginally only. As per the official registration data, the University of Delhi has received a total of 34,306 applications (inclusive of unpaid) in 2020 for M.Phil/PhD courses, whereas in 2019, the overall number of applications stood at 34,548. This means that in terms of overall applications, DU had 242 more candidates who had applied for M.Phil/PhD admissions last year.

But, the unpaid applicants won’t be able to participate further in the admission process, what counts is the paid registrations. In terms of paid applications, a total of 21,699 candidates have applied for M.Phil/PhD courses in 2020, while in 2019, only 20,862 applications were received. This means that in 2020, DU has received 837 more paid applications.

As DU registrations for both exam based and merit-based admissions have been closed now, the university will start to release its cut off for different participating colleges in September 2020.
