NEW DELHI: Researchers in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi have developed the performance analysis of miniaturized circuitry used in mobile phones and tablets “so that the devices may be designed for better performance even under erratic DC power supply”, a statement from the institute said.

The research was conducted by Hitesh Shrimali, associate professor, school of computing and electrical engineering, IIT Mandi, and his research scholar, Vijendra Kumar Sharma, along with Jai Narayan Tripathi from IIT Jodhpur.

According to the researchers, power spikes and fluctuations can degrade the performance of the mixed circuit over time. Any fluctuation in the power of the battery can impact the performance of the device and lead to its deterioration.

The designs of circuitry, the researchers say, continue to use the concepts developed 20 years ago and have not considered the altered physics seen at nanometric size scales of modern electronics parts.

Analysis to upgrade

“There is a need to understand the design equations that take into account the miniaturized parts of mixed electronic circuitry in order to improve the performance of the device and enhance the robustness of the components to power fluctuations”, said Shrimali.

The analysis, the statement says, will help in further designing of the devices for better performance and in retaining quality even under erratic DC power supply and extending the life of these daily electronic products.

The research team analysed the losses that occur due to the power supply fluctuations to optimize the design specifications of mobile devices in terms of speed, power, gain, distortion levels, among others.

The results of this work have been published recently in IEEE Open Journal of Circuits and Systems.
