NEW DELHI: In memory of a former student who died due to COVID-19, fellow alumni of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta donated one unit of an oxygen concentrator to the institute.

Dharmes Oraon, a postgraduate program batch alumnus, succumbed to COVID-19 on April 30 COVID. A few of Oraon’s batch mates came forward to donate a movable oxygen concentrator especially for clerical staff and contract workers. The device will be kept at the medical unit of the institute for emergency use.

Dheeraj Singh of the PGP batch of 2007 approached the dean of new initiative and external relations, Manish Thakur to extend help amid the gross shortage of oxygen supply. “This donation of a life-saving device reiterates Institute-alumni relations. Such generous gestures on behalf of our alumni is an affirmation of the emotional connection that they have with their alma mater,” said Thakur.

According to IIM Calcutta, the oxygen concentrator is a safer, less expensive, and more convenient life saver and homecare medical equipment. “The oxygen concentrator will be a vital addition to the institute premises keeping in mind the looming health crisis that has grappled the country. For any potential health concern that may arise for individuals present on the institute campus, this could be a life saver,” an official statement said.
