Subramania Bharati Chair on Tamil Studies to be established at BHU: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced to set up Subramania Bharati chair on Tamil Studies to be established in Faculty of Arts at Banaras Hindu University.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, on the 100th death anniversary of Subramania Bharathi, announced to set up a chair in memory of the Tamil poet at Banaras Hindu University.

PM Modi, in a tweet, said, “India is proud to be home to the world's oldest language, Tamil. Today, on the 100th Punya Tithi of Subramania Bharati, honoured to announce the setting up of the Subramania Bharati Chair of Tamil studies at BHU, Kashi.”

He was inaugurating Ahmedabad-based Sardardham Bhavan via video conferencing.

“The vision of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat that Sardar Saheb used to carry, the same philosophy has been shining with full divinity in the Tamil writings of Mahakavi Bharati,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) will prepare students to face global realities and help develop skills in demand from the beginning.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi paid tributes to Bharati and said, “On his 100th Punya Tithi, paying homage to the remarkable Subramania Bharati. We recall his rich scholarship, multi-faceted contributions to our nation, noble ideals on social justice and women empowerment. Here is a speech I gave on him in December 2020.”

Subramania Bharathi, popularly known as "Mahakavi Bharathi", was a Tamil writer, poet, journalist, Indian independence activist, and social reformer. He fought for the emancipation of women, against child marriage, stood for reforming Brahminism and religion. He was also in solidarity with Dalits and Muslims.
