ARIIA 2020: IIT Madras tops Atal rankings for innovation

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has emerged as the winner of the second edition of Atal Rankings of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) 2020. KIIT Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha has been ranked first the private universities category.
The ministry of education today released the ranking of universities based on initiatives taken to promote innovation and entrepreneurship on the campus. 674 institutions participated in this year's ranking. The Vice-President of India M. Venkaiah Naidu released the second edition of ARIIA 2020 rankings.
Naidu said: “Innovation must become the heartbeat for education. The quest for excellence should become the norm. I congratulate all institutes which have secured the top honours. I would like to compliment not only the Heads but also the other faculty members and youngsters who are assisting them. The other Institutes should re-double their effort as this is an annual effort…Learn from the best in the world and aim to better than the best. I hope this ranking, named after one of India’s Illustrious Prime Minister, will inspire all higher education institutes to be ‘Atal' (steadfast) in their commitment to creating world-class Institutions.”
ARIIA 2020: The universities
Among the centrally funded institutions, which includes central universities, Institutions of National Importance (INIs), IIT Madras is followed by IIT Mumbai, IIT Delhi, IISc Bangalore and IIT Kharagpur.
IIT Madras excelled in ARIIA owning to its strong entrepreneurial eco-system that encourages students to become job-generators. The IIT Madras Incubation Cell (IITMIC) in the IITM Research Park is India’s leading deep-technology startup hub with Innovation and Impact as key differentiators/drivers.
Thanking the Education Ministry for according this recognition to the Institute, Prof Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, said, “IIT Madras is known for its world-class innovation ecosystem consisting of the Research Park and several other centres, that has already produced world-class companies and disruptive technologies for India. We are proud to be recognized a second time in succession as India’s top innovative educational institution under ARIIA.”
IIT Bombay has been ranked second in the category. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director, IIT Bombay, said, “IIT Bombay places a great emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship and strives hard to ensure that the fruits of research get translated to products, benefitting the country”.
KIIT Odisha has been ranked first in the private university category; while in the government-aided university category, Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) Mumbai has been ranked first.
In the Government aided college and institutes category, College of Engineering Pune has been ranked first. SR Engineering College, Telangana, has ranked highest in the private self-financed college category.
The government also introduced, ranking of women universities this year, in which Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women, Tamil Nadu has stood first, followed by Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women.
ARIIA 2020: New category
The ARIIA Rankings were launched in 2019 along with National Institutional Ranking Framework, India Rankings.
This year institutions have been awarded under six categories in the ARIIA 2020, which also includes a special category for women-only higher education institutions to encourage women and bring gender parity in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship.
The other five categories are centrally-funded Institutions; state-funded universities; state-funded autonomous institutions; private or Deemed-to-be universities and private institutions.
Last year, during ARIIA 2019, top 10 institutes in ‘Public funded’ and five institutes in ‘Private and self-finance’ categories were declared and highest-ranked institutes were felicitated by the President of India.
