NEW DELHI: Banaras Hindu University (BHU) will implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 from the upcoming academic session 2024-25. The implementation of NEP 2020 will give students the flexibility to choose minor courses from a large range of options. The council also approved the rationalization of fees in various undergraduate programmes.

As per the institute, the academic council proposed the implementation of the four-year undergraduate programme, for both honours and research. According to the proposal, only 10% of the total admitted students with a CGPA of 7.5 and above will be allowed to opt for UG honours with research based on merit.

After the implementation of NEP 2020, all undergraduate students will have to pursue credits on multidisciplinary courses, skill enhancement courses, ability enhancement, value-added courses, as well as internships. Those pursuing honours with research will write a dissertation in their final semester, the institute said.

The academic council's approval for the implementation of the National Education Policy is merely the initial step, and much remains to be accomplished, the vice chancellor of BHU said. “We will continue to have constant discussions and brainstorming internally in the faculties and the departments to address challenges as well as tap the opportunities that lay ahead,” he further said.

NEP 2020: Hostel facility criteria

The five-year Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of Legislative Law (BALLB) course offered by the faculty of law, categorized as a special course, will remain unchanged. Similarly, skill enhancement professional programs at the south campus and those regulated by specific regulatory bodies will continue to operate in the same manner, as they are not within the purview of the NEP 2020. Additionally, the council approved the proposal to provide hostel facilities in subsequent years only to students with at least 70% attendance in classes.
