NEW DELHI: The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has opted for assignment-based exams for all terminal and final year students, the university announced through an official notification.

BHU, in a notification, said: “Banaras Hindu University (BHU) administration has decided to hold assignment-based assessment for students in the intermediate/final semester for the academic year 2019-20. Teachers are to send assignments to students through email or other electronic devices which are to be completed within 15 days of receiving”.

BHU has said that those students in courses that were already completed by middle March, when the institute closed, can opt for assignment-based exams. For these students, the best mark out of the terminal and the assignment-based exams will be taken as the final marks.

Final year students will be graded on end-semester and terminal semester examinations, their weightage in a ratio of 30:70, for calculating the final marks.

BHU also said that students of intermediate semesters will be promoted to the next academic year, that is students will not be required to score the minimum 4.0 grade points as was required.

The marks for these students will be decided based on the assignment-based assessment and a terminal component, both of which will be for 50% of the marks. Students will also have the option of improving their marks in the “next available examination” in the succeeding year.

BHU said that students with backlogs will be required to clear their backlogs “whenever the next examination is held”.
