BITS Pilani launches design school in Mumbai; admissions from February 26

NEW DELHI: Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS Pilani) has announced the launch of BITS Design School (BITSDES). This future-focused school, modelled after leading global design institutes, will be set up in Mumbai. The admission process at BITS Design School for the founding class will begin on February 26.

BITSDES permanent campus will open in early 2025 and its first academic session will start in August 2024 at the interim campus in Powai, Mumbai. Additionally, the BITS design school, BITS school of management, and BITS law school will all be located on the permanent campus.

The institute said that it will introduce a four-year, bachelor of design programme in the academic year 2024-25, followed by a master’s degree programme and a faculty development programme for design educators over the next two years.

“The BITS design school curriculum has been co-designed and will be reviewed annually by Aalto University, Finland,” the institute said.

BITS Pilani: BITSDES streams

As per the official statement, students can choose any of the five streams offered for specialisation in the second year of the programme. These streams include physical product design, digital product design, human-centred design, experience design, and visual design.

“BITSDES students will gain access to and benefit from the more than 1,80,000 BITS Pilani alumni network spanning 55 Countries, one of the strongest and most illustrious networks of industry leaders, founders, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders,” the official press release read.

Speaking on the occasion, the chancellor of BITS Pilani, Kumar Mangalam Birla, said, “BITS design school will reimagine design education with a bold, trans-disciplinary, competency-based approach, and embrace avenues where design can positively impact people, businesses, and the world.”
