COVID-19: More states postpone board exams

NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have postponed board exams as the nation faces a lock-down after the coronavirus outbreak.

Tamil Nadu has postponed Class 10 or SSLC exams beyond April 14, 2020. The SSLC exams were to begin from March 27.

However, there is no change in the ongoing Class 11 and Class 12 exams. For Class 12, one exam is scheduled on March 24. Class 11 will have one exam on March 24 and another one on March 26.

Meanwhile, Karnataka has decided to postpone its Pre-University (PUC) and SSLC board exams.

The last PUC examination scheduled for March 23 has been postponed. The SSLC exams scheduled to start from March 27 to April 9 have also been postponed in Karnataka.

The new dates will be announced in the first week of April, S Suresh Kumar, minister for primary and secondary education, told Times of India after an emergency meeting chaired by the chief minister.

Around 8 lakh students have registered for the Karnataka SSLC examination.

Initially, the state had decided to let the examinations continue, putting in precautions like wearing masks and using sanitizers.

The Karnataka government has also decided to close the state's borders and set up quarantine centres and dedicated a hospital to treat COVID -19.

The CBSE and ICSE boards have already postponed their board exams, scheduled to be held from March 19 to 31.

India has confirmed 382 COVID-19 cases. Currently, there are 359 “active” cases and the death toll has risen to seven.
