Deakin University inaugurates India campus, to offer Australian education at half the cost

NEW DELHI: Deakin University has launched its first international branch campus in India. During the inaugural event, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with the Deakin University delegation about enhancing collaboration between government and educational institutions pertaining to cyber security.

Deakin University’s GIFT City campus will give the local students access to future-ready, world-class, postgraduate (PG) courses in business analytics and cyber security. The officials informed that the courses will be offered at half the cost of Australian international fees.

The campus will have digital classrooms, libraries and cyber security labs. It will also provide students an opportunity for digital integration with Deakin’s Australian campuses. The course fee for the two-year course will be Rs 21 lakh. Classes will be delivered by local, international staff and guest lecturers.

The last date to submit the application is March 31 and the classes will commence in July 2024.

Deakin University, ranked in the top 1% universities worldwide, is set to expand its academic portfolio at the India campus. Recently, Deakin in collaboration with IIT Madras has announced to launch a research academy and offer a four-year joint PhD programme and scholarships for students.

“The campus will also serve as a startup incubator, nurturing entrepreneurial talent and innovation with specialised short courses and extensive support to elevate the regional startup landscape,” the official statement read.

"Opening the world's first international branch campus in India reflects our commitment to offering global education that empowers students to excel in the digital age. This is an investment in the future leaders who will uphold and strengthen the bond between our nations," Iain Martin, vice-chancellor, said.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Ravneet Pawha, Deakin vice-president global alliances, said: “Our bold vision is for GIFT City is to be a regional hub in the future, attracting students from across the globe to India, and offering Australian students a unique opportunity to spend a trimester at Gujarat.”
