NEW DELHI: On a regular basis, the cases of COVID-19 are on a hike in India. In order to not prioritize the exam over the health of the students, educationists are demanding to cancel the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), Joint Entrance Examinations Main (JEE Main), and Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). Education experts are proposing the authorities to use different methods of assessments to grant admission.

NEET is scheduled to be conducted on July 26, 2020, for granting admission to around 1,63,150 MBBS/BDS/AYUSH/BVSc&AH seats. As it is a single entrance test for granting medical admission to undergraduate courses, its impact is higher on the mindsets of around 16.84 lakhs registered students.

JEE Main is scheduled to be conducted from July 18 to 23 for granting admissions into 31 NITs, 23 IIITs, and 23 GFTIs. Around 8,69,010 candidates have appeared for the entrance exam for the January session.

Scrap NEET and JEE Main for a year

“Everyone is under distress during this Covid-19 pandemic and the cases are only expected to increase in July and August. An examination for crores of students across the country would be highly impossible to be held safely. At least for this one year, the exams must be scrapped for students’ sake.” Dr. R Murali, Tamil Nadu secretary, Save Higher Education Movement, said to the Times of India. He further stated that mental pressures are also being faced by students during this pandemic, which affects their lifestyle and preparations a lot.

Educationist, V Jayendran Mani, president, Tirunelveli matriculation schools’ association, also said to TOI that conducting exams even after COVID-19 cases decreases will affect the mental health of students. It will be more appropriate to consider board exam scores for admissions to engineering and medical courses.
