Fake Universities List 2022: UGC warns against taking admission in Bible Open University Of India

New Delhi: In a public notice issued on Thursday, higher education regulator, the University Grants Commission has warned students against taking admission in “self-styled” Bible Open University of India, operating in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The institution is offering degree programmes and courses in “gross violation” of the UGC Act 1956.

The UGC Act stipulates that only universities established through central, provincial or state laws and standalone institutions designated as deemed-to-be universities will be allowed to confer degrees upon students. Bible Open University of India does not meet any of these requirements and, therefore, is not authorised to offer degree programmes.

“Therefore, the general public, students, parents and other stakeholders are cautioned through this public notice not to take admission in the above mentioned self-styled institution, taking admission in such self-styled institution may jeopardize the career of the students,” the UGC public notice says.

Also on Thursday, the UGC issued a list of 21 fake universities it has identified across nine states and union territories. The large number, eight, are in Delhi, followed by Uttar Pradesh with four. Andhra Pradesh has another one – Christ New Testament Deemed University. However, the Bible Open University of India is not listed in this.
