NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday, February 5, approved the Indian Institutes of Information Technology Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2020 through which five more IIITs will get the status of 'Institutions of National Importance (INI)'.

These IIITs are functioning at Surat, Bhopal, Bhagalpur, Agartala and Raichur. They join the band of 15 IIITs that have already been declared as INIs.

The Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also formalised 21 existing posts of directors, one each in 20 IIITs set up under private-public-partnership agreements and one in IIITDM Kurnool (IIIT-CFTI) and an equal number of registrars in these institutions.

The five IIITs granted INI status are functioning as societies registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. They will now be covered under the IIIT (PPP) Act, 2017.

The IIITs, set up in PPP-mode are envisaged to promote higher education and research in the field of information technology.
