Hyderabad University gets Rs 17.76 lakh funding for summer school for underprivileged students

NEW DELHI: The Skill development centre of School of Life Sciences (SLS), Hyderabad University, has been awarded a funding of Rs 17,76,000 under the Science Academies’ Education programme. The Hyderabad University will utilise the fund to conduct summer school for underprivileged students. The Science Academies’ Education programme is operated by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA).

The university will also get an additional amount of Rs 10,00,000 to meet the expenditure for consumables. Students who have completed post-graduation in a college located in a rural area and enrolled in a doctoral programme in any area of biology in a university located in a rural area are eligible for the summer school. The applicant should have secured a minimum CGPA of 6.0 at the post-graduation level. He/she shouldn’t have attended any summer school sponsored by any funding agency of the union government. The university will accept a maximum of 25 outstation and 10 local students.

Hyderabad University professor B Senthikumaran will be the director of the programme while professor Suresh Yenugu will be the coordinator. The programme aims at providing graduate, postgraduate and doctoral students enhance skills in subjects related to biology.

The institute said, “Students studying these subjects in higher education institutions (HEIs) located in disadvantaged areas do not necessarily receive intensive training on laboratory skills, thus disabling them to compete in academia and industry both at global and Indian levels. Gaps in the expected skill sets and the qualification of a student are ever increasing. There is an urgent need to fill these gaps.”
