25 new BTech, other engineering courses at IITs, NITs, CFTIs: A list

NEW DELHI: From degrees in semiconductor and microchip design to certificate courses in electric vehicles and data engineering – top engineering institutions, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), have introduced a range of courses in the past year to keep up with the advancements in technology.

Many of these also come with the option of online or hybrid learning and some do not require candidates to qualify entrance tests such as the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced or the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Here’s a list of courses launched.

Degree

BTech in General Engineering

• Institution: IIT Mandi

• Duration: 4 years

• Eligibility: Valid JEE Advanced score and a minimum of 75% in Class 12

This course provides students with four specialisations: fashion, design, nascent engineering, including energy engineering, and innovation and entrepreneurship. Fashion courses are offered in collaboration with National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and energy engineering courses are provided in collaboration with Dalarna University, Sweden.

BTech in Microelectronics and VLSI Engineering

• Institution: IIT Mandi

• Duration: 4 years

• Eligibility: A valid JEE Advanced score and a minimum of 75% in Class 12

This course is designed to train students in the core areas semiconductor industry and microchip designing such as the very large scale integration (VLSI), and chip designing and fabrication.

BTech in Materials Science and Engineering

• Institution: IIT Mandi

• Duration: 4 years

• Eligibility: A valid JEE Advanced score and a minimum of 75% in Class 12

The course will give students an understanding of the structure-properties correlation, processing, and service behaviour of engineering materials, including semiconductors for electronic devices, ceramics for energy conversion and storage, and polymers for emerging biotechnology.

BTech in Mathematics & Computing

• Institution: IIT Mandi

• Duration: 4 years

• Eligibility: A valid JEE Advanced score and a minimum of 75% in Class 12

This course focuses on a broad range of mathematical and computational concepts and techniques such as engineering graphics, vector calculus, data structures, mathematical foundations of computer science, and introduction to programming languages such as Python.

BS-MS in Chemical Sciences

• Institution: IIT Mandi

• Duration: 4-5 years

• Eligibility: A valid JEE Advanced score and a minimum of 75% in Class 12

The programme aims to equip students with fundamental concepts of both chemistry and engineering. The BS programme offers specialisations in branches of chemistry and minors in engineering and humanities branches. The 4-Year BS programme can be extended for one more year to complete the 5-year BS-MS programme.

BTech in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research

• Institution: IIT Bombay

• Duration: 4 years

• Eligibility: A valid JEE Advanced score and a minimum of 75% in Class 12

The programme will focus on logistics and supply chains, operations and analysis, industrial systems, linear optimisation, and network flows. It also has introductory courses on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and data science.

BSc (Hons) in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (Online)

• Institution: IIT Guwahati

• Duration: 4 years

• Eligibility: Class 12 with mathematics and at least 60% marks

The programme will focus on big data analysis, cloud computing, data mining, and programmes such as Python. The programme will be 100% online and offered on the Coursera platform. Students can choose their own pace of study and opt for an optional 4-week campus immersion plan for hands-on training at IIT Guwahati.

BTech-MTech (Computer Science & Engineering)

• Institution: South Asian University

• Duration: 5 years

• Eligibility: Class 12 with science and at least 65% marks. A valid JEE Main score

This is a five-year integrated course that offers both B.Tech and M.Tech. Students will have to complete a project in the final year to avail the degree. Candidates can apply to the dual degree programme in the same admission form provided for SAU’s B.Tech programme.

B.Tech in Material Engineering

• Institution: Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), Allahabad

• Duration: 4 years

• Eligibility: Class 12 with physics, chemistry, mathematics and at least 75% marks. A valid JEE Main score.

Students will learn about the fundamentals of working with substances such as metals, ceramic, and plastics to create new materials. The programme also includes introductory courses on AI and ML.

BTech in Electronics Engineering (VLSI Design and Technology)

• Institution: Punjab Engineering College

• Duration: 4 years

• Eligibility: Class 12 with minimum 75% marks and a valid JEE Main score

This programme will teach students about VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration), which is the process of designing integrated circuits while making semiconductors and microchips.

BTech in Computer Science and Engineering (Artificial Intelligence)

• Institution: Punjab Engineering College

• Duration: 4 years

• Eligibility: Class 12 with minimum 75% marks and a valid JEE Main score

This programme will focus on computer science engineering with specialisation in the foundations and applications of AI and ML.

BTech in Computer Science & Engineering (Data Sciences)

• Institution: Jamia Millia Islamia

• Duration: 4 years

• Eligibility: Class 12 with physics, chemistry, and maths, and a minimum of 55% marks. A valid JEE Main score

Apart from the basic computer science subjects, the programme

has several specific topics such as data mining, data analytics, deep

learning, social network analysis, natural language processing and information

extraction, and neural networks

BTech in Electronics (VLSI Design & Technology)

• Institution: Jamia Millia Islamia

• Duration: 4 years

• Eligibility: Class 12 with physics, chemistry, and maths, and a minimum of 55% marks. A valid JEE Main score

This programme aims to provide students with practical experience in designing and executing complicated integrated circuits along with classroom instruction, hands-on laboratory exercises, and industrial internships.

MSc in Biological Sciences

• Institution: IIT Delhi

• Duration: 2 years

• Eligibility: A valid Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) score.

The course will have a strong emphasis on quantitative biology as a core topic to fill the gap in big data analysis. Students will be able to participate in projects or internships in academic laboratories, as well as in industry settings in the last semester.

MTech in Artificial Intelligence

• Institution: IIT Kharagpur

• Duration: 2 years

• Eligibility: A valid GATE score

The MTech course focuses on a variety of AI and data science courses. This includes foundations in machine learning, algorithmic and mathematical foundations of AI, deep learning foundations and applications, AI foundations and applications. The course will require students to complete a one-year project on a specialised topic.

Integrated MSc-MTech (Computer Science)

• Institution: South Asian University

• Duration: 3 years

• Eligibility: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or relevant subject with mathematics and a minimum of 55% marks. A valid JEE Main score.

This is an integrated postgraduate programme with an option for specialisation in AI and ML, and advanced networks. The course will require students to complete a one-year dissertation on a specialised topic.

MTech in Data Science

• Institution: Jamia Millia Islamia

• Duration: 2 years

• Eligibility: BTech or MSc with at least 55% marks. A valid score in the Jamia Millia Islamia Entrance Exam

The programme will cover subjects such as data visualisation, data mining, big data, natural language processing, machine learning, deep learning, and cloud computing.

Certificate courses

Certificate Programme on Fundamentals of EVs and Charging Infrastructure

• Institution: IIT Delhi

• Duration: 5 months

• Eligibility: A bachelor’s degree. Open also to students pursuing graduation.

This is a certificate course that will teach the fundamentals of electric vehicle manufacturing, charging infrastructure, and renewable energy

Certificate Programme on Hands-on Artificial Intelligence for the Real-World Applications

• Institution: IIT Kharagpur

• Duration: 3 months

• Eligibility: A bachelor’s degree. Open also to students pursuing graduation

This 3-month weekends-only online program is offered by the faculty of IIT Kharagpur in collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)

Certificate Programme in Full Stack Development – MERN Stack

• Institution: IIT Kanpur

• Duration: 3 months

• Eligibility: A bachelor’s degree. Open also to students pursuing graduation

This course will help students gain an understanding of the individual technologies of the MERN stack, manage database connections, and understand the basics of server configuration. This course is available in English, Hindi, and Tamil.

Certificate Programme in Data Science

• Institution: IIT Kanpur

• Duration: 11 months

• Eligibility: A bachelor’s degree. Open also to students pursuing graduation

This course teaches programming languages such as Python and R. It also familiarises students with AI tools such as Chat GPT and Midjourney. This course is available in English, Hindi, and Tamil.

Certificate Programme in Data Engineering

• Institution: IIT Kanpur

• Duration: 11 months

• Eligibility: A bachelor’s degree. Open also to students pursuing graduation

The course covers cloud platform proficiency, streaming data processing, data modelling and database design. This course is available in English, Hindi, and Tamil.

Certificate Programme on Backend Development (Java Spring Boot)

• Institution: IIT Madras

• Duration: Flexible

• Eligibility: Any Bachelor’s degree

Participants will learn to design, develop, and deploy backend systems, focusing on key concepts such as RESTful APIs, database integration, security, and microservices architecture.

Certificate Programme on Android Application Development (with Kotlin)

• Institution: IIT Madras

This course focuses on familiarising participants with Kotlin, a new open-source programming language built by JetBrains. Google recently announced Kotlin as the official language for Android

Certificate Programme on Android Application Development (with Flutter)

The course will focus on the creation of mobile applications tailored for the Android platform. It covers topics such as user-interface design, data storage, and application functionality using Flutter, a popular cross-platform framework
