NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) recently announced the start of 'Sports Excellence Admission' (SEA) for the academic year 2024-2025. The institute will provide two supernumerary seats in each of its undergraduate programmes for Indian nationals, one of which will be reserved specifically for female students.
IIT Madras is the country's first IIT to provide sports-based admissions. The admission procedure through SEA, mandates that a student qualifies JEE (Advanced). However, unlike the conventional Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) portal, the admission process for SEA will be facilitated through a distinct portal managed by IIT Madras. This IIT Madras sports-based admission portal was inaugurated on June 11, 2024.
To be eligible to apply for admission to IIT Madras through SEA, candidates are required to fulfill the following criteria:
Candidates who are eligible for admission through SEA will be given a score based on their performance, achievement in the sporting events. Candidates can have a look at the points system below.
Achievements | National level competition | International level competition |
Gold | 35 | 100 |
Silver | 25 | 90 |
Bronze | 15 | 80 |

A distinct Sports Rank List (SRL) will be compiled, evaluating candidates based on their performance in a specified list of sports detailed in Appendix - C. Seat allocation will rely solely on the SRL. However, inclusion in the SRL does not guarantee admission.
