The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) will admit its second batch of students to the B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence (AI) programme for the academic year 2025–26.

This undergraduate degree, offered by the institute which is ranked 1 by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in the country, has been designed to equip students with essential skills and knowledge, according to official statements.

The B.Tech in AI course is being offered through the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI.

Limited intake of 50 students

Students who clear the JEE (advanced) examination can opt for this programme during the upcoming Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JOSSA) counselling. The intake for this specialized BTech is capped at 50 students, and the course code is 412L: Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics.

The degree has been developed to blend AI fundamentals with application building and will offer students exposure to key domains such as speech and language technology, computer vision, control systems, time-series analysis, and more.

V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, said, “AI and Data Analytics is an emerging area. This BTech course has a carefully evolved curriculum aligned with both industry and research needs.”

Research and real-world solutions

Key areas of this BTech program include focusing on application to real-world problems and fair and responsible AI. This includes how to apply data analytics and AI techniques to tackle real-world challenges across diverse domains.

B Ravindran, Head of WSAI, said, “Artificial Intelligence is a transformative technology. WSAI allows us to synergize all AI and Data Science activities. We ensure students know enough about AI fundamentals to continue independently if they pursue research careers.”

The programme’s interdisciplinary approach also means students will work on system-oriented applications, engage with ethical aspects of AI, and explore fair and responsible AI in their coursework, the statement said.
