IIT Roorkee, DST, MeitY establish supercomputing infrastructure to support research, development

IIT Roorkee’s Centre for Development of Advanced Computing inaugurated a supercomputing facility on March 7, 2022.

NEW DELHI: A supercomputing infrastructure was established at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), under the National Supercomputing Mission with the objective to support research and development. The facility has been established at IIT Roorkee under a joint initiative by the department of science and technology (DST) and the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY).

The IIT Roorkee supercomputing facility was inaugurated on March 7, 2022, by BVR Mohan Reddy, chairman of the board of governors at IIT Roorkee. An agreement had been signed between IIT Roorkee and CDAC previously to establish a supercomputing facility.

“The new high-performance computational facility would aid researchers to solve complex problems of national importance and global significance,” said a statement from IIT Roorkee.

According to the statement, the institute will contribute towards the National Supercomputing Mission through capacity-building and by providing skill training for the workforce required for supercomputing research.

"IIT Roorkee will carry out advanced research and capacity building using this supercomputing infrastructure developed under NSM. I am happy to see that the critical components of PARAM Ganga, such as motherboards for compute nodes and Direct Contact Liquid Cooling Data Centres, are manufactured in India as per the Government of India initiative of Atmanirbhar Bharat,” said BVR Mohan Reddy, chairman of the board of governors, IIT Roorkee.

"National Supercomputing Mission was launched in India in 2015 with an objective to establish state-of-the-art facilities to foster advanced research in compute power hungry areas. Under this mission, IIT Roorkee and C-DAC have joined hands to make PARAM Ganga possible. It will provide a big boost to the research activities of IIT Roorkee in many different areas," said Ajit K Chaturvedi, director of IIT Roorkee.
