IIT Roorkee partners USAC Dehradun to collaborate on space science, disaster management, and geospatial research with student and faculty exchange

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has signed an agreement with the Uttarakhand Space Application Centre (USAC) to work together in the fields of space science and geospatial technology, with a focus on issues relevant to Uttarakhand.
The agreement was signed at the IIT Roorkee campus in the presence of senior officials, including director Kamal Kishore Pant and USAC director Durgesh Pant.
Through this partnership, the two institutions aim to strengthen academic and research collaboration, particularly in areas such as climate change, disaster management, and natural resource management.
The agreement between IIT Roorkee and USAC focuses on joint research, knowledge sharing, and building technical expertise.

Both sides plan to work on research projects and pilot initiatives in space applications and geospatial technologies. The collaboration will also allow for the exchange of faculty and scientific knowledge, helping deepen research efforts.
Kamal Kishore Pant said, “This collaboration with USAC reinforces IIT Roorkee’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge research and fostering meaningful partnerships that address regional and national challenges. The integration of space science and geospatial technologies will play a crucial role in sustainable development and disaster resilience.”

As part of the agreement, students from IIT Roorkee will get opportunities to undertake internships, projects, and thesis work at USAC, depending on institutional guidelines.

The partnership also includes joint supervision of MTech and PhD students, giving them access to facilities and mentorship from both IIT Roorkee and USAC.
Durgesh Pant said, “The partnership with IIT Roorkee will significantly enhance our capabilities in research, innovation, and capacity building. By leveraging combined expertise, we aim to develop impactful solutions in areas critical to Uttarakhand, including natural resource management and disaster mitigation.”
The two institutions also plan to organise training programmes, workshops, hackathons, and outreach activities to promote space science and technology in the region.
The IIT Roorkee and USAC will also jointly host seminars, conferences, workshops, and short-term courses on topics of shared interest.

These initiatives are expected to encourage collaboration among researchers, students, and policymakers, while also supporting innovation in geospatial and space technologies.
