Jharkhand cancels enrollment in DElEd course for teacher training programme

After Haryana, Jharkhand cancelled the two-year DElEd programme that taught candidates to teach the elementary school for Classes 1-8 from 2023-24.

NEW DELHI: The Jharkhand government has cancelled the Diploma in Elementary Education (DEIEd) course for a two-year primary teacher training programme. Jharkhand is the second state to discontinue DEIEd course after Haryana.

The Jharkhand Council of Educational Research and Training on Thursday announced the cancellation of enrollment in two-year primary teacher training programme, DElEd course for the academic session 2023-25.

“It is hereby informed to the general public that through the office order of the Director, Jharkhand Council of Educational Research and Training, Ranchi, letter no. 401 dated 21.3.2023 the enrollment process for DElEd it has been decided to cancel with effect from 2023-24,” the official statement read.

In a meeting held on March 2 and 3, the Haryana government decided to cancel the DEIEd course in Block Institutes of Teacher Education (BITEs), Government Elementary Teacher Training Institutes (GETTIs) and private self-financed colleges from 2023. The decision was taken as the course was not in line with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020)

The two-year professional programme aims to prepare candidates to teach the elementary stage of education for Classes 1 to 8. “The aim of elementary education is to fulfill the basic learning needs of all children in an inclusive school environment bridging social and gender gaps with the active participation of the community,” as per the Jharkhand Teachers Training (BED) College.

Candidates who secured a minimum of 50% of aggregate marks and SC, ST, OBC candidates who secured 45% in the higher secondary (Class 12) or its equivalent examination were eligible for admission. They were permitted to complete the programme within a maximum period of three years from the date of admission to the programme. However, the enrollment has been cancelled now.
