Man opens fire at anti-CAA protesters at Jamia Millia Islamia

NEW DELHI: A man was held outside the Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI), Delhi, for firing a pistol at the student protesters on January 30.

On Martyr's Day, students of JMI had organised a peaceful march against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 from the campus to Rajghat. The man, brandishing a country-made pistol allegedly fired at the protestors. According to reports, the shooter had allegedly been placing his plans on Facebook for days. He posted about it on January 30 as well.

Unfazed by the heavy deployment of the Delhi Police on the campus premises, the man was witnessed by the media present in the area shouting open threats to anti-CAA protestors. The police stood at a distance until the man fired a round. His video and photograph spread instantly on social media where users were quick to point out Delhi Police's inaction in the face of imminent violence.

According to Quint and CNN News18, Shadab, a student of JMI was hurt in the incident. The injured student has been taken to the Holy Family Hospital under heavy security.

The Asian News International has reported that the gun-wielding man has been taken into police custody and an investigation is undergoing. The identity of the attacker was later confirmed by the South-East district DCP Chinmoy Biswal. ANI further reported that Shadab Farooq, a student of JMI, sustained injuries on the left hand in the incident.

The shooter is allegedly a teenager who attended a Central Board of Secondary Education-affiliated private school in Jewar, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. The CBSE confirmed that the image of a board exam mark sheet circulating online was indeed his.
