MBBS student found hanging inside hostel died due to depression: UP Deputy CM

NEW DELHI: The Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister, Brajesh Pathak, today said that a probe into the death of a MBBS student, who was found hanging inside the hostel of Saifai Medical College, pointed towards depression. The UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath had ordered a CBI probe after the mother of the deceased alleged it to be a case of murder.

“In connection with the suicide case of Himanshu Gupta, a first-year MBBS student of Saifai Medical College, an inquiry committee was constituted. On the basis of evidence and family statement it is evident that the student died by suicide due to depression,” Brajesh Pathak tweeted.

The incident came to light when a hostel mate of the deceased went to call him for dinner on August 21 and found him hanging from the ceiling fan, as per reports. Himanshu Gupta (19) a resident of Gorakhpur was studying first-year at Saifai Medical College.

The probe was ordered after Himanshu Gupta’s mother claimed that there were some injury marks on his body. Following this, the Samajwadi Party (SP) in a tweet termed the incident as "extremely saddening", and demanded the Uttar Pradesh government t o provide financial assistance of Rs 1 crore to the family of the deceased.

In a similar incident, a first year BPharm student died by suicide by electrocuting himself after wrapping naked wires on his hands in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
