Medicos urge Telangana Governor to postpone PG medical examinations

New Delhi: In interaction with the experts with the Telangana State Governor, Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan on Monday, June 15, 2020, the former took up the matter to postpone Telangana PG medical exams. The interaction was based on the topic of combating COVID-19 and the experts raised the topic of postponing the medical postgraduate examinations of the state.
As per the reports, a statement from the Raj Bhavan listed out several suggestions to combat the pandemic and one of these was to postpone PG medical examinations, as life is more important than examinations.
Recent developments
Two days prior to the experts’ interaction, a medico who had tested positive for COVID-19 wrote to the Telangana governor requesting her to intervene in the matter of postponement of Telangana PG medical examinations. These examinations are scheduled to be conducted between June 20 to 29, 2020.
Insight to the matter
The dates for conduction of PG medical examinations in Telangana have been announced by the authorities. However, due to the rapid community transfer of COVID-19, the medico along with some others is going through the treatment of the virus, the quarantine and treatment are posing difficulty in their studies.
“I fear that I may not perform well in the exams and risk losing an academic year because of an unfortunate incident. It is simply not possible to face everything simultaneously: the health problem, studies, the exam anxiety, and the social stigma.” the junior doctor said to the Times of India.
Statistics of PG medical students
In the final exams, which are being requested to be cancelled, around 1,405 students from the state are expected to be participating. It is also being said by the experts that out of this number of students, 663 belong from colleges located in the hotspot zones of Greater Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts.
Other related information
It must be noted that Soundararajan, by profession, is herself a medical doctor and also the Chancellor of the exam conducting university, Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS).
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has also been filed on the same in the Telangana High Court by the Healthcare Reform Doctors’ Association (HRDA). The petitioner requests the authorities to wait and conduct the exams after the pandemic is over, instead of rushing for the same in these odd hours.
