NEW DELHI: Of the 71 private universities the higher education regulator, University Grants Commission (UGC), inspected since 2016, just 42 have submitted compliance reports that the commission has noted.
The inspections were carried out by the UGCs expert committees, the Ministry of Human Resource Development told the Lok Sabha on December 9.
There are 344 private universities in the country established through state laws. Once the state government notifies the establishment of a private university, “the respective university is asked to submit detailed information to the UGC in a prescribed format for inspection”.
Yet to comply
By December, 263 private universities had submitted information to the UGC for inspection. “Out of these, 199 have been inspected by the UGC so far,” says the ministry’s reply to a question raised in Parliament. “Of these 199 university, 132 have submitted their compliance reports which have been noted by the commission.”
In the last three years alone, 71 private universities were inspected. The expert committee reports contained observations on the shortcomings and suggestions on programmes, faculty, infrastructure and finances. These were sent to the universities for compliance and roughly 60 percent of these universities have sent their reports.
Out of the 23 inspected in 2019, just seven have submitted reports. They have had the shorted time to comply. However, universities inspected as far back as 2016 and 2017 are yet to submit as well. The number of universities inspected in a year and the number to submit compliance reports noted by the UGC are given below.
