Schools closed today in Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra as IMD issues orange alert

As heavy rainfall continues to batter south Indian states it is expected to return to north India from July 25, as per the IMD.
NEW DELHI: Schools and other educational institutions have been directed to remain closed today in Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra, as per reports. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert in the coastal regions of Karnataka and predicted heavy rainfall in Maharashtra in the next four days.
India has been witnessing incessant rains from early this month. As heavy rainfall continues to batter south Indian states it is expected to return to north India from July 25, according to IMD weather prediction.
In view of the flood-like situation and water-logging, several states have been issuing orders to close schools, colleges considering the safety of students. Some exams were also postponed due to the situation.
Karnataka school closed today
Chikmagalur district authority have declared holiday for schools in 5 taluks - NR Pura, Mudigere, Sringeri, Chikmagalur, Koppa - in view of heavy rain in the region, deputy commissioner of Chikmagalur Meena Nagaraj said, as per the ANI report. IMD predicted that the coastal regions of Karnataka will witness heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours.
Kerala school closure
One among the three states that was issued an orange alert was Kerala. Schools have been closed today in Kannur, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts, the northern parts of Kerala. The weather department has also issued yellow alert to seven more districts in the state, including Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Palakkad, Thrissur, and Malappuram.
Maharashtra schools closed today
District Collector Yogesh Mhase directed all schools to remain closed in the Raigad district today in view of the heavy rains in the region, the ANI reported. The order comes after the district recently faced a massive landslide that claimed 27 people. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Raigad as well.
