The exam is being conducted for 9.5 lakh candidates across 598 centres in 91 cities. The examination is being held in online mode for the first time in December, since NTA has taken on the responsibility of conducting the examination. Earlier, the exam would be held in offline mode. While filling the application form of UGC NET 2018, candidates were required to select four exam centres in the order to their preference. Thus, the candidates are taking the examination at the centres allotted to them according to their filled choices.

As per the press release of NTA released on December 17, 2018, 'for the first time, CCTV Surveillance is started in examination centres to curb malpractices in the examinations. The NTA is making arrangements for live viewing at remote location and recording CCTVs Systems of all examination centres at control room situated in the NTA.'
