UGC picks 16 Universities, 18 colleges for research on ‘national priorities’
NEW DELHI: Tezpur University, Manipur University and Mizoram University from northeast are among the 16 universities selected by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under the Scheme for Trans-disciplinary Research for India’s Developing Economy, or STRIDE.
Apart from these 16 universities, UGC has also selected 18 colleges for “research capacity building and human resource development”.
All institutions will get grants ranging from Rs. 50 lakh to Rs. 1 crore to fund research projects in the identified thrust areas in humanities and human sciences areas like Philosophy, History, Archaeology, Liberal Arts, Indian Languages and Culture, Mass Communication, Environment and Sustainable Development.
The scheme will provide support to research projects that are “socially relevant, locally need-based, nationally important and globally significant”, states a release issued by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) in July.
Grant available for this component is upto Rs. 1 crore for one Higher Education Institution (HEI) and upto Rs. 5 crores for multi institutional network. UGC is also proposing to provide a grant of Rs 2 lakh for developing proposals.
Fergusson College in Maharashtra; Newman College, Kerala; Holy Cross College, Tamil Nadu; and St Aloysius College, Karnataka are among the 18 colleges selected.
Research on ‘national priorities’
The UGC announced STRIDE in July to boost research in India, especially of the kind that “contribute[s] to national priorities with a focus on inclusive human development”. The programme will support the creation, development and integration of “new ideas, concepts and practices for the public good and strengthening civil society”.
Vignan's Institute of Information Technology, Andhra Pradesh has been recognised under category- II and is the only private institutions selected in the first round.
