NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has written to universities encouraging them to promote internship-embedded degree programmes. It has also asked institutions to embed apprenticeships and internships in the general degree programmes offered by them.

In his letter, UGC secretary Rajnish Jain referred to the UGC guidelines issued on this programme earlier this year and requested universities to promote apprenticeships and internships in the university as well as colleges affiliated to them.

Earlier in August, Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ launched the UGC Guidelines for Higher Education Institutions to offer Apprenticeship/Internship embedded Degree Programme.

“The minimal linkage between the general degree curriculum and employer's requirement calls for an effective remodelling of degree programmes, driven by changing needs of the industry and service sector. Apprenticeship and internship can play a significant role in this context,” says the letter.

The letter further says: “Considering the interests of the students and society at large, you are requested to kindly promote apprenticeship/internship embedded degree programmes.”
