2,119 MBBS seats in AIIMS; 74% faculty positions vacant in AIIMS Madurai: Govt

NEW DELHI: There are a total of 2,119 MBBS seats in 20 functional All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), according to the data shared by the Ministry of health and family welfare in the Rajya Sabha.

Of 23 AIIMS across the country, three are yet to be functional including AIIMS Awantipora, AIIMS Darbhanga, and AIIMS Manethi (Haryana). The government has approved a project cost of Rs 1,828 crore, Rs 1,264 crore, and Rs 1,374 crore for the three institutes respectively. Of this, no fund has been released for AIIMS in Bihar’s Darbhanga.
Minister of state for health and family welfare Bharati Pravin Pawar shared the information while replying to the question raised about details of year of sanction, faculty, students, approved project cost, fund released and IPD/ OPD in each AIIMS, by the Member of Parliament (MP) Binoy Viswam from Kerala.
The oldest institute and top medical college, AIIMS Delhi has the maximum number of MBBS seats – 132 – while AIIMS Madurai which was sanctioned in 2018 has only 50 seats.
Nearly 74 percent of faculty positions are lying vacant in AIIMS Madurai while 50% are yet to be filled in six institutes. Moreover, AIIMS in Jammu and Madurai are still not functioning with an Outpatient Department (OPD) or Inpatient department (IPD).
