NEW DELHI: In a major development, the Uttar Pradesh government has increased 20% seats in postgraduate (PG) courses and added 900 MBBS seats in government medical colleges across the state.

“Another feather in the cap of Team Medical Education of UP government. After a record increase of 900 MBBS seats, a whopping 20% increase in PG (200) seats in Govt Medical Colleges in a year. A game-changer in addressing adverse doctor population ratio in UP,” Alok Kumar, UP principal secretary medical education said.

According to the official data, the government medical colleges had 1027 PG seats in the year 2020-21, which has been increased to 1227 PG seats in 2021-22. Whereas the private medical colleges saw an increase of 318 PG seats.

As compared to last year’s 2928 UG seats, this year the MBBS seats saw an addition of 900 seats, taking the total to 3828 seats in government medical colleges.

Overall, the number of PG seats has been increased to 518 and 1,250 MBBS seats have been added in both private and government medical colleges in the last one year.

“Uttar Pradesh is on its way to becoming a hub of medical education in the coming times. Improving health education has been a priority of the Yogi Adityanath-led government for which significant steps were taken in the last five years. With the opening of new medical colleges, the opportunities for the youth willing to study medicine will also increase significantly," Kumar said, as per reports.
