In a tragic accident, a London-bound flight, carrying 242 passengers, crashed near Ahmedabad airport soon after taking off, with several casualties feared. The Air India plane is reported to have crashed on the BJ medical college hostel with several undergraduate students ‘missing’, and some claiming to have seen a burnt dead body. The Boeing aircraft could be seen losing altitude quickly in videos going viral on social media and crashed in the Meghaninagar area near the Ahmedabad international airport around 2 pm. As per various reports, several MBBS interns were injured as they were present in the hostel mess, it being the lunch hour.
"Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest on http://airindia.com and on our X handle," Air India posted on X.

Prime minister Narendra Modi, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, aviation minister, along with doctors and medical community expressed shock and offered condolences.
Taking to X, Pradhan said, Disturbed to learn about the plane crash in Ahmedabad. Rescue operations are underway on war footing and all efforts are being made to ensure all kinds of assistance, including medical assistance. Praying for the safety of everyone onboard. May Almighty give strength to the families of those on board.”
A surgeon Rohan Khandelwal said, “Devastating plane crash near BJ Med College. Over 240 lives were onboard & reports of tragic loss of young medics and healthcare workers. A dark day for the medical fraternity and the nation. Prayers for the departed, and strength to the survivors and grieving families.”
“A devastating plane crash has struck the heart of BJ Medical College, crashing directly into the Doctor Hostel. The lives of numerous bright, young medical students—our future healers—have been tragically lost, along with the passengers onboard, including former CM of Gujarat, Shri Vijay Rupani,” said another surgeon.
Talking about the college, the doctor remarked, “BJ Medical College is not just Gujarat’s pride but a beacon of excellence for the entire nation. The scale of this loss is beyond numbers—this is a deep wound to the medical community and to our country’s future.”
