AIIMS Jodhpur denies ragging claims by former MCh Neurosurgery student; says issue before court

During a recent graduation ceremony held at AIIMS Jodhpur, the institute’s former MCh neurosurgery student alleged that he had been subjected to ragging during his tenure and claimed that his senior "deliberately" failed him in an exam three times in a row. However, AIIMS Jodhpur has denied the allegations made and said that the matter is before the court, pointing to legal proceedings.

In a response to the complaint raised by the student, AIIMS Jodhpur posted on its official X (former) account and claimed that “no ragging complaint” was made by the former student during his tenure.

According to media reports, the doctor, who graduated in the MCh batch of 2020-23, alleged he was failed in exams “deliberately” three times after reporting a ragging complaint against a senior in 2021. He added he finally passed the exam on his fourth attempt, only after an independent external evaluation was carried out under strict security.

Vikrant Sharma, the former student, alleged that some seniors adopted a “biased attitude” towards him after the complaint, which also affected his studies.

AIIMS Jodhpur denies ragging claim

The institute, in its statement, reaffirmed that it has a “robust anti-ragging system” and as per its records, there was no ragging reported by the students. The complaint was made only in July 2023, after the declaration of his final exam results.

“AIIMS Jodhpur has a robust anti-ragging system, and as per Institute records, no ragging complaint was made by the student during his tenure — the allegation was first raised only in July 2023, after declaration of his final MCh examination result.”

‘I should have passed in first attempt’, said student

According to The Print report, the students also said that he should have passed the exam in his first attempt, after his complaint was filed.

“I later passed the independent examination. Now I’ve been awarded a passing degree on my fourth attempt. I should have passed on my first attempt,” Sharma alleged.

AIIMS Jodhpur further added that it follows a transparent examination process and comprises external examiners from reputed institutes from across the country, and that the student’s whole exam was videographed after the complaint made by him.

“The whole examination was videographed after the complaint of the examinee. The matter is subjudice before the Hon'ble High Court of Rajasthan, and it would be inappropriate to comment on unverified allegations,” the AIIMS Jodhpur statement added.

AIIMS Jodhpur conducted its 5th convocation ceremony for graduating students on July 26, Sunday, where Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel was present as the chief guest, and Tejas M Patel, the president of AIIMS Jodhpur, as the guest of honour. The institute conferred degrees upon 1,189 students, as per The Print reports.
