Allahabad HC orders fresh selection of 69,000 teachers; Akhilesh Yadav, Anupriya Patel hail verdict

NEW DELHI: The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to prepare a fresh selection list for the appointment of 69,000 assistant teachers in the state. The court has set aside the selection lists issued in June 2020 and January 2022, which included 6,800 candidates. The court has directed the state government to prepare a new merit list within three months, ensuring compliance with the Basic Education Rules and Reservation Guidelines.
The court instructed that in preparing the new selection list, measures should be taken to minimize any negative impact on the currently employed assistant teachers by permitting them to finish the ongoing academic session. This step is aimed at avoiding disruption to students' education.
Reserved candidates in general merit list to shift category
The bench revised its previous order, stating that reserved category candidates who qualify for the general category merit list should be moved to that category. Additionally, it mandated that vertical reservation benefits be extended to horizontal reservation categories. The court upheld the single-judge's ruling to nullify the January 5, 2022, selection list, which included 6,800 candidates from the reserved category.
The single-judge had ruled that candidates who received reservations in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) should not be considered under the unreserved category, even if they met the general category cut-off marks. However, the current bench has now clarified that these candidates should be moved to the general category if they qualify based on merit.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav congratulated the agitating teachers over the HC order on appointment of 69,000 teachers and described it as a victory of dedicated and focused struggle for justice. "The recruitment of 69,000 teachers has once again proved that it to became a prey to scam and corruption under BJP. We demand that a fresh and just list of selected candidates be released to enable transparent and unbiased appointments to put the derailed education system of the state back on track," Yadav said ob 'X'.
He added, "We will keep a close watch on the new list and make sure that none of the candidates are unjustifiably deprived of their rightful chance to make it through."
Anupriya Patel, Keshav Prasad Maurya hail HC decision
Anupriya Patel, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare welcomed the Allahabad High Court verdict saying, the backward classes commission admitted that the reservation norms were not applied in this recruitment drive. "The decision of the Hon'ble Allahabad High Court in the 69,000 teacher recruitment case is welcome. The Backward Classes Commission itself had admitted that reservation rules were ignored in this recruitment case", she said on 'X'.
Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Keshav Prasad Maurya also hailed the the decision of cancellation of appointment of 69,000 assistant teachers. "The decision of HC of Allahabad High Court in the recruitment of teachers is a welcome step towards social justice. This is the victory of those backward and Dalit class characters who fought a long battle for their rights. I welcome them wholeheartedly", he said on X.
