Amaravati to get India’s first dedicated Quantum, AI University campus by NIELIT

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has approved the establishment of India's first dedicated Quantum and Artificial Intelligence (AI) university campus in Amaravati by the National Institute of Electronics and Information technology (NIELIT), as per PTI reports.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the capital region development authority (CRDA) chaired by Naidu. NIELIT operates under the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India.

In an official press release issued on Thursday, Naidu said, "We have approved the establishment of India's first dedicated Quantum and AI University campus in Amaravati by the NIELIT, under the MeitY, Government of India."

Amaravati Quantum AI campus gets Rs 730 crore

As per the PTI report, the proposed NIELIT campus will be developed across 8.5 acres in Amaravati, with an estimated investment of Rs 730.7 crore over five years. The project is proposed to be fully funded through grant-in-aid from MeitY.

The university will focus on Quantum Technologies, Artificial Intelligence, Semiconductors and other emerging deep-tech areas. Its activities will combine education, research, skilling, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Academic and advanced technology skill-development programmes are scheduled to begin from September 2026 at a temporary facility at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur. The permanent campus will be developed in Amaravati.

NIELIT university to offer deep-tech programmes

According to a PTI report, the university will offer undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, doctoral, and executive programmes. These will cover areas including quantum computing, quantum communication and security, AI and machine learning, data science and semiconductor fabrication.

Other areas will include chip design, very large scale integration (VLSI), assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP), embedded systems and high-performance computing.

Quantum research block planned at campus

The quantum research, innovation and incubation block will cover approximately 1.2 lakh square feet. It will have infrastructure for quantum computing and communication, quantum photonics, quantum security, cryogenic systems and high-performance computing, as per PTI report.

The facility will also include cleanrooms, nano-fabrication and semiconductor technologies, chip design, data centres and start-up incubation facilities.

NIELIT campus targets 8,250 learners

According to a PTI report, the project is expected to train around 8,250 learners over five years. Of these 1,650 learners will be covered through formal degree programmes, while 6,600 will be trained through skilling and certification programmes.

The annual intake is expected to reach around 3,913 learners by the fifth year. NIELIT also proposes collaborations with IIT Tirupati, IIIT Sri city, Andhra university and JNTU institutions for academic programmes, research and technology development.

Amaravati campus to include green facilities

As per PTI report, the permanent campus will include solar power generation, solar water heating and energy-efficient utilities. EV charging and scientific waste-management systems and also planned. The campus will have smart classrooms, laboratories, hostels and a 500-bed residential facility.

The initiative aligns with the national quantum mission, IndiaAI Mission and India semiconductor mission. It aims to strengthen Andhra Pradesh's deep-tech talent, research, entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem.
